Gwen Stefani Replacing Adam Levine in The Voice from Season 17

USA Today – Gwen Stefani might’ve said “shut up” – or perhaps “Don’t Speak” would be more fitting – when presented with the opportunity to return to “The Voice.” But in a new interview, the singer reveals she was stunned by the invitation to come back.

“I’m so, so excited about it and so shocked,” Stefani, 49, told E! News. A few times she has been around that track, having appeared as a coach on Seasons 7, 9 and 12. She replaces original coach Adam Levine, who is walking away after 16 seasons.

“Every season that I’ve been back, it’s been a shock because they kind of wait till the last minute (to tell you),” she told the outlet. “I guess they really want you to be like, ‘Please, take me.’ “

Stefani will join coaches Blake Shelton (her boyfriend since 2015), John Legend (the victorious coach in the most recent season, which ended last month), and Kelly Clarkson.

Stefani said she and Shelton have begun “to have pillow talk and we’re discussing (the strategy),” adding, “He’s like, ‘It’s still gotta be competition,’ and I was like, ‘You got it.’ “

Despite anticipating the job being “really fun,” Stefani said she is feeling “a little overwhelmed in so many different ways.”

“Because I haven’t done it in a while (and) because Adam’s not gonna be there,” she said. “He’s the first person to reach out to me and say: ‘Hey, you gotta do this show. The show’s great, you’re gonna love it.’ “

Levine’s departure was revealed on May 24. In an Instagram post later that day, the Maroon 5 frontman reflected on his many seasons with the show, which he called an “amazing ride.” But, he said, “for me, it was time to move on.”
